What is the application process?

The Long-View application process is relatively simple.

To apply to Long-View:

1. fill out an application for your child

2. submit the application fee to complete your child's application file

3. look for an email for us about your child’s Demo Day, Long-View's version of a "testing day" (we will contact you after you've submitted the application and fee and will assign your child to a time block on a Demo Day)

4. sign up for our newsletter (see footer of this page) so you don’t miss any important information or updates on Long-View

We do not accept outside test scores, teacher recommendations, or report cards, as they rarely predict who will thrive at Long-View. Instead, we place an emphasis on getting to know you and your child through the application, Parent Observation Days, and Demo Days. We take the application very seriously, as it provides our first opportunity to get to know your child and your family and to see whether there is a good fit between Long-View and your child. Please answer as fully and honestly as you can. Applications that are submitted from October 1, 2024 - January 24, 2025 are not kept in a rank order according to date received; thus, we encourage you to research the school before filling out the application so that you can be sure your answers on the application are thorough.

What happens on a Demo Day? And how does my child get a look at the school?

Like everything at Long-View, we are thinking differently about how the admissions process goes, and how a "testing day" looks and feels for a child. Long-View's version of a "testing day" for applicants is called Demo Day.

All applicants are scheduled for a Demo Day session lasting approximately 90 minutes. During Demo Day, we run a demo or demonstration lesson for a small group of children and our assessment of each child's readiness for Long-View occurs within the context of the lesson.

In addition, because we are doing a “demonstration lesson,” your child will come away from Demo Day with a better understanding of what Long-View is like. Demo Days occur on days in which our own students are not at school; thus, your child will not see a “regular day” in action. However, the demonstration lesson is preceded by a short tour, and we will talk about why the Long-View environment looks different. Before starting the demonstration lesson, which gives kids a feel for how it feels to learn at Long-View, we’ll talk about learning at Long-View and how, for example, we often have discussions with many people sharing ideas, but do so without the typical classroom norm of raising hands. Most kids leave Demo Day feeling like they have a good idea of what Long-View is like.

After the Demo Day, some—but not all—applicants may be invited for a Shadow Day. On a Shadow Day, older children are invited to spend a 1/2 day immersed in the Long-View community and younger children are scheduled for a shorter visit. During this time, we observe how your son or daughter integrates him/herself into an academic learning community and we conduct academic assessments in order to make final admissions decisions. Please don't read too much into whether or not your child is asked for a Shadow Day; this decision is not only based on individual children, but can be related to group dynamics, age levels, and whether a Demo Day visit provided all the necessary information.

Demo Days: Friday, January 31, 2025 and Friday, February 7, 2025

  • Demo Days occur on two Fridays from 8:00-4:30. Please hold both of these dates until we contact you about your child’s date/time slot.

  • We will contact you after you've submitted the application and fee and will assign your child to a time block on one of the two Demo Days based on age/grade/gender. We have very little flexibility typically, so it is not possible for you to request a certain date or a particular time. Because Demo Days involve small groups of kids coming at the same time and each group is back-to-back, it is very important that you ensure your child is able to come on the assigned date/time.

When will we be notified about acceptance?

Admissions decisions are made thoughtfully, based primarily on the family’s and school’s shared vision regarding educational approaches and practices, as well as the child's eagerness to learn and ability to handle a rigorous curriculum within a collaborative community environment.

We are not able to accept every child that is a good fit for Long-View, as we have a large number of applicants each year. A small number of applicants are placed in our waitpool; if we have an unexpected opening after the admissions process concludes or during the school year, we go to our waitpool to fill that spot.

Notice of acceptance will arrive via email a few weeks after Demo Days, with contract and deposit due within five days. Thus, if you have any lingering questions, it’s best to get those asked and answered before the acceptance window opens. Please let us know by February 15 if you require a visit or phone discussion to clear up any last minute questions.

Should you receive a notice of acceptance, you will need these items to complete your child’s registration within the five day window:

  1. Signed contract (both parents, if applicable, will be asked to sign via Docusign)

  2. Enrollment fee of $1000 (can be paid by check or online via credit card)

  3. Updated vaccination record — please procure this from your pediatrician ahead of time (all vaccinations must be completely up-to-date by start of school)

  4. Completed enrollment and health form (general information filled out via Docusign)
