You may have read about The Long-View Gazette on our blog in February after this student run-organization published its second edition. During this unprecedented time, like many great organizations, this newspaper has adapted its work and story coverage. Read their guest blog post below to learn more about their current projects.

The Long-View Gazette is the main student-initiated, student-run newspaper for Long-View Micro School. We provide news about Long-View Micro School itself, the coronavirus, and whatever big global event that is happening at the current moment. The Gazette writers’ ages range from nine to eleven.

Before COVID-19 we published print editions and handed them out to peers at our school. However, when COVID-19 happened and because we all had to do social distancing, we knew we had to change our format to continue to reach our readers.

Thus, we went digital a couple of months ago and now run a news database with over 350 different people viewing our site in the past 3 months. Also because of COVID-19, we have started a podcast entitled “the CoronaCast'' that interviews important members of our community, and gathers their opinions on the coronavirus situation. We have five editions so far. The first one was about teachers and how they face new challenges as schools worldwide go temporarily digital. Because of this, our first edition of this podcast is interviewing three teachers:  Cathy Lewis (Long-View), Stacey Ross (Casis), and Rebecca Andersson (Long-View). Our second edition focuses on parents who are now put under pressure to keep themselves safe, along with their kids and/or their own parents. For that episode of the CoronaCast we interviewed 3 parents: Nicole Vickey, Lena Hill, and Tom Vale. Our third edition focused on first responders and we interviewed two different people who have either experienced coronavirus or know someone who has had coronavirus. In the fourth edition, we interviewed three fellow kids about their experiences with COVID-19 and what they think about learning from home. In our most recent edition, we interviewed the Mayor of Austin, Steve Adler. You can listen to all of these editions through our website. We are looking forward to interviewing the US Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, next week.

We understand that this is a hard time for everyone, but we want to do our part and spread the news. Creating a website, developing podcasts, interviewing important people of our community — like the mayor of Austin and the current United States Secretary of Education —  are just the beginning of the things that excite us, the Long-View Community, and hopefully those reading this.

We hope to see you on our website!
